Poland says it has ‘positively identified’ Ukrainian SS commander
Polish authorities want a 98 year-old Minnesota man arrested and extradited for what they say is his role in atrocities committed in Poland in 1944. At least 40 civilians were murdered in 2 villages allegedly under the direction of Michael Karkoc, who immigrated to the United States in 1949, having lied to officials about his background. Karkoc claimed he did not perform any military service during the war, but that is directly contradicted by Karkoc’s own words in a 1995 Ukrainian-language memoir:
Mr. Karkoc said he had helped found the Ukrainian Self Defense Legion in 1943, in collaboration with Nazi officers, to fight on behalf of Germany and against the Soviet Union.
Karkoc was under investigation by German authorities in 2013, but was determined unfit to stand trial due to his advanced age and Alzheimer’s Disease.
His family has denied the allegations.
